I work on how AI is built, financed and governed, and on the people and institutions that decide how it turns out.
What I do
I’m at Cloud Capital, where I work with CFOs, CTOs and investors to underwrite AI and cloud infrastructure spend. Much of that comes down to the economics underneath AI: what it actually costs to run, who is accountable for that cost, and how it should be financed.
Before that, at Paddle, I founded AI Launchpad, an accelerator for AI founders. Across its cohorts it accelerated more than 350 startups from over 90 countries, which is a useful way to see a technology wave from the inside, one early-stage company at a time. I’ve also built and exited a bootstrapped AI platform with friends.
Alongside this, I advise builders, investors and governments on policy and investment decisions in human-wrapped AI.
Research
My doctoral research at Paris School of Business studies how corporate governance shapes carbon outcomes. Its main empirical work, co-authored with Hatem Rjiba, was published in Finance Research Letters in 2022. Across 1,514 firms in 43 countries, companies with a higher share of women on their boards had lower carbon emission intensity.
While working on that research, I started asking the same question of AI, which was quickly becoming part of how companies make decisions. If who sits around the boardroom table leaves a measurable mark on a company’s emissions, then who sits around an AI system probably matters just as much.
Human-wrapped AI
That’s the idea behind a phrase I use a lot: human-wrapped AI. AI outcomes are shaped not only by models, but by the people, organisations, incentives, policies, economics and governance wrapped around them. The same model can produce very different results depending on who decides where it is used, how it is paid for, who checks its work, and who is accountable when it is wrong.
The WRAP Framework, a simple diagnostic for working out what an AI system actually is, is one early attempt to make that practical.
